Ralph Henley age 87 - “Mr Mabac” died on 25th December after 5 months hospitalised with a serious illness. Ralph was a founder member of the Mabac league back in the early 70s and remained an active member until a couple of years ago. Then carried on assisting at meetings. The Mabac committee had a tree planted in Windsor Park 4/5 years ago for his devotion and hard work. This tree is along side the START line of the Mabac Windsor 8 mile event. 2015 race date is 11th Jan.
Ralph started the idea to award certificates to any one running the distance in as many minutes as their age. And many still attempt to do this and succeed.
He was also a founder and active member of LDWA (Long Distance Walking Association). He also organised the 27th Dec. “Winter Wander” event every year for over 25 years from Englefield Green. Starting the 15/20 walkers away at 9.00 and then the runners at 10.00. He issued them all with maps of the12 mile route around Windsor Park. He would then dash by car to Blackness gate, the 6 mile mark with 2/3 large plastic cartons of drinks Warm or Cold. Then he would carry the cartons into the wooded area to meet the groups.
Over the past 2/3 years this is event has been organised by the Walkers on 26th and RR organising the runners on 27th since Ralph has been unable to manage. With both groups hoping to keep the event going.
One of Ralph’s last challenges 10 years ago was with a group of long distance walkers to help celebrate a friends 70th birthday by walking 70 miles that incorporated the four home counties en–route in 24hours. And all 7 (one a lady) succeeded with 2/3 hours to spare. Ralph has also come along at many of our YA meetings and helped with car-parking duties. I was lucky enough to have met Ralph with-in the first year of moving from Wembley. I am sure he will never be forgotten.
Ralph's funeral is on - Tuesday 13th January at Hanworth Crematorium at 2.40pm.
The clubs two allotted London Marathon places went to Kim Warner and Robin Hodkinson. We’ll be there cheering you on. Good Luck lads.
UK Senior Rankings - Congratulations to Eleanor Gatrell who is ranked 6th in the SP with 15.93 and also 6th in the Merit rankings and ranked 27th in the Disc. with 42.84. Remembering Eleanor is a Master/Vet and to be ranked in the senior group is a greater achievement.
Jack Phipps U/23 is ranked in the senior group. Jack is ranked 17th the Pole Vault with 5.00m.
Well done Eleanor and Jack.
